The more things don't change, the more they stay the same.
US military chief signals changes ahead in Iraq strategy
The top US military officer says the country’s military leaders are making their own reassessment of the course in Iraq, signalling major changes ahead with Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld’s departure.
“We should not expect to go with a plan that’s chipped in stone and stay with that plan no matter what,” General Peter Pace said, chairman of the Joint Chiefs-of-Staff.
“We need to give ourselves a good, honest scrub about what is working, what is not working, what are the impediments to progress, and what should we change about the way we’re doing it, to ensure that we get to the objective that we have set for ourselves,” General Pace said in an interview with CBS television.
“We’re making our recommendations. We’re having our dialogue. And we’ll make the changes that are needed to get ourselves more focused on the correct objectives,”
This old codger lived through and (contrary to the hoary old view that "if you remember the 60s/70s then you weren't there") sadly remembers scenes like these and even more sadly remembers the even hoarier saying, "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it."
C'est la guerre. C'est la badly run guerre. C'est la tres badly run guerre. Thank you linesmen. Thank you ballboys. Thank you Donny ("It is unknowable how long that conflict ["the war in Iraq] will last. It could last six days, six weeks. I doubt six months." - Feb. 2003) Rumsfeld.
Think we're being a cheapshot cynical old bastard? Anyone willing to convince us that the above pictures won't be part of the end game?
Any such Pollyanna submissions will be generously received and not laughed at ...well not out loud.
